Today you turn 3 years old. I could type a long story and talk about the day you were born; the moment I saw you; the moment I held you for the first time; the first days we spent snuggled up at home learning to be mother and son.
I could talk about your birthmom Jill and how I think of her every day, but especially when we approach your birthday. I think of the weeks we spent with her and your bio siblings and how special that time was. I could tell you so many stories, but I'll wait and save those stories for when you ask.
Instead, I think I'd like to talk about who you are now. You my son, are amazing. You are one of the cool kids. You have that dynamic, charismatic personality that is like a magnet. It draws people in, old and young alike. Really, it's a quality that so many people wish they had and try to mimic, but you either have it or your don't. It is an intangible quality that you are so lucky to possess.
You are already cool in your Montessori school. It is like Norm entering Cheers when you go to school. All the kids say, "Hi Jake" the moment you step in your class room. To which you reply with a sly smile, "Hi friends".
Your sense of humor and comic timing is amazing. You love to joke and you appreciate when you are teased and joked with. I can't wait till you start telling jokes, you are going to be hysterical to listen to! You are already pretty funny when you try to make up stories and then start laughing because you know it isn't true.
Your athletic abilities never cease to amaze daddy and I. You can smack a ball with a golf club or baseball bat like a 10 year old. And it cracks me up how you rather watch Golf on TV than about 99% of the cartoons available. Even the way you ride your bike is cool. You are very comfortable about the way you cruise around on your bike or the new Big Wheel. I imagine our future holds a few trips to the ER with the way you like to try new tricks.
You make our day when you walk past us and say, "Love you mom" or "Love you dad". I can't express adequately how much that means to us. It melts us every time. Your hugs, kisses and random smiles at us through the window when you are outside playing with your dog and check in on us with that cheesy grin of yours, it is just priceless.
You are so smart. You know all your letters, both upper case and lower case. You know all your colors. Although you get tripped up on some of the mid range pinks and purples. You can count pretty high, it varies day-to-day how high. You love books and especially books about dinosaurs. You know a lot of shapes and can spend nearly an hour tracing shapes and letters. Academically I think you are pretty advanced for your age.
You are such a good big brother. You are so gentle and caring for your baby brothers. You tell me when one is crying and you try very gently to soothe them and talk to them. I can't wait to watch you teach them things. You are going to be such an amazing friend and mentor to them. They are so lucky to have you as their big brother and friend.
You really are a special person. Even if you weren't my son I'd want to know you. I'd want to be part of your life. Any one that has ever met you has commented about what a great kid you are. They are right, you really are a great kid.
Jake, your daddy and I don't let a day go by without saying to each other how much we love you, how amazing you are, how lucky we are to have you in our lives. You will never know how much you are loved by us, but I can assure you, no parent has ever loved a child more than we love you. Thank you for being our son. Thank you for the best 3 years of my life.
I love you Jake, Happy Birthday big boy!
